Frequently Asked Questions

What is working equitation?

Working Equitation (WE) is a dynamic equestrian discipline that tests the versatility and skills of horse and rider combinations in ranch work.

The sport emphasizes training horses in the classical horsemanship traditions unique to the competing team’s country of origin.

WE blends traditional riding methods with contemporary competition elements, offering a well-rounded equestrian experience. It assesses various aspects of horsemanship, challenging the horse and rider's dexterity, responsiveness, agility, cooperation, and versatility.

The sport features four distinct phases:

  • Dressage
  • Ease of Handling (EoH), also known as Maneability
  • Speed Test
  • Cattle or Cow Trial

Each phase focuses on different skills, from the precision and elegance required in Dressage to the agility and quick thinking needed for Maneability and Speed tests, culminating in teamwork during the Cattle Trial.

By demanding a wide range of abilities, Working Equitation serves as a holistic test of equestrian skill. It also plays a vital role in preserving traditional riding practices by adapting them for modern competition.

I've watched YouTube videos of the "pros" riding in Working Equitation courses, and wow! My horse and I aren’t at that level yet. Is it still possible for me to get involved?

Absolutely you can. Working Equitation is set up so that horse/rider combinations of ALL levels and ANY breed can get involved, compete and feel a sense of accomplishment. There are levels from beginner to masters as well as a in-hand, youth, amateur and open divisions.

Do I have to compete?

No, you are welcome to simply join ECWE and partake in non-competitive educational events. It’s a wonderful way to improve your horsemanship by simply having a job to do and goals to meet. You can do as much or as little as you want.

In working equitation, the partnership between horse and rider is essential. It’s not just about the moves; it’s about the harmony and trust that allows you to navigate any challenge together.
